Hi Sean. I have been reading your site for a while and am a Brony as well so I am in a unique position to speak as reader of your site and a fan of the show.Been reading since you posted your Birdman Chronicles on your old site. I myself got into the show back on August 2011. The show started back in October 2010. Personally for me the show isn’t the main part that I am apart of the fanbase. It is just the community that we have in the fan base. We help each other out when in need and it is more positive then I have had in the Nintendo fanbase. The community itself is for the most part what people should be treating each others like in the real world. As for masculine men in the Brony community there is someone who does a live show on Everfree.net on Monday at 5:00 pm PST Here is his most recent video of his show and it is with one of the show writers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jADbZFSuZCY Also there is a site out there for Bronies on the Military called FOBEquestria.com
I will say this for the show. The first episode it just sets up the characters and then just to jump to the 3rd season from there well you missed all the character growth for all the characters because it does happen over time and they are not the same in each episode. Lauren Faust said at an convention that when she was making the characters she thought of the stereotypes and then ways to break those sterotypes because she was tired of the way they were portreyed in shows these days. These episodes I think first broke the stereotypes shown in the season one opener. For Fluttershy these will do. Dragonshy,The Best Night Ever,Putting your Hoof Down, and Keep Calm and Flutter on. For Pinkie Pie. Party of One and Too Many Pinkie Pies. For Rarity. A Dog and Pony Show, Sisterhooves Social and Secret of my Excess. For Rainbow Dash. Sonic Rainboom, Read it and Weep, and Hurricane Fluttershy. For Applejack. The Last Roundup and The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 and Spike at your Service. Finally for Twilight Sparkle these episodes will work. Look before you sleep, Swarm of the Century,The return of Harmony part 1 and 2, Lesson Zero, It’s about Time, The Canterlot Wedding part one and 2, The Crystal Empire 1 and 2 and Magical Mystery Cure. All 3 seasons are up on Netflix if you happen to have it.
Anyway I will say this in closing. The gaming community while fun in some segments of it can be absolutely negative and hard to be a fan in other parts. I was a member on a forum which will remain nameless. Basically I got tired of how the mods were treating the members and how the members were treating each other. You can personally send anything and everything at me and I will laugh at it and or ignore it but when you start treating others like that well that is where I personally draw the line. My point to this Sean is the Brony community has been a really positive force in those 2 years during that time I was on that forum and it still is to this very day.
I think I realized what always irked me about the ‘Bronys’. It is the constant dumping of pony pictures, pony videos, pony stories into places where people do not care about the ponies. When people go, “WTF is with the ponies?” the response is, “Don’t be a hater! OMG.” But it isn’t the ponies that are the issue. It could be the dumping of any subject where it doesn’t belong (say flamingos).
If you are reading a forum thread about a video game, and someone keeps posting flamingo gifs in it, its not that you hate the flamingos. There’s just a time and a place for everything.
They should add a Malstrom Pony who barges in and says, “Friendship is NOT magic! Life sucks. Your entire existence will be under the saddle for someone else, working. When you die, your body is turned to glue for even more money.” If such a pony was added, then perhaps I would watch the show.
