Sorry for the image usage, but this has to be seen by everyone. I’ve never seen a worse case of PR.
This is confirming Durango will be always-online. You know what this means? I don’t even know why anyone would buy Microsoft’s console. It is bad enough with always-online games (at best a necessary evil in games that require it like World of Warcraft). Do we need always-online consoles?
Will the mainstream support an always-online console? The answer is no. Many people will buy the Durango without realizing this ‘feature’. I can just see a steady torrent of complaints to Microsoft as to why their new Xbox won’t work when the Internet is down. “The old Xbox worked just fine when Internet was down!” This could become very expensive for Microsoft. Red Ring of Death Part 2.
The big question is will the hardcore gamers accept this? The hardcore gamers swallow anything the Game Industry puts out so why wouldn’t they accept this? After all, they want to be ‘hardcore’ on their new Xbox machine so I wouldn’t be surprised if they embrace it.
Nintendo’s Wii U suddenly is looking much better. No matter what anyone says about the Wii U, at least it isn’t always-online.
This is a huge opportunity for Sony’s PS4. This is the last generation equivalent of Sony coming out and saying “$599 US dollars”. Absolute shock from gamers is the response to the ‘always online’ console.
