All the rhetoric that STEM degrees were in demand appears to be just rhetoric. While math and engineering may not be popular classes in America, they are popular everywhere else in the world. And Indian expatriates don’t mind the lower wage.
I know people in their 50s still paying off their student loans. It will be worse for new graduates who should be coming out around now since 2008 was about five years ago. They will have all this student loan debt and limited job prospects. Unlike a car or house which you can sell, you cannot sell your student loans. You either pay off the student loan or you die (student loans vanish when the person is deceased).
