No doubt you’ve already heard about the trainwreck of the XBOX One
(Seriously, that’s the new title), which only leaves us with what the
PS4 will do.
It’s still too early to tell for the PS4, and for all I know, it’s
probably not gonna be that great (But still better than the XBox One).
Your two (And possibly three) cents on this?
Generation 8 is the era of Economic Depression. Even if a console did everything OK, they would be hitting a steep wall of uphill growth. All the trends are against gaming now.
Who is going to lose the least? This is the question for the three consoles.
How do you sell a game console when people don’t have jobs and faced with rising costs? At the end of the generation, PlayStation 3 costs $250 and Xbox 360 costs $200. It’s too expensive. PS4 and Xbox One are going to be too expensive. Wii U is too expensive.
Generation 8 will be what Iwata said would happen for Generation 7 sans the Wii: game market will slowly and steadily decline.
I do expect a product, likely from Apple, to come out a few years from now such as iTV that will totally demolish the dreams of a ‘one entertainment’ device. Remember Sony tried this with the PSP and then Apple came out with the movie iPod.
The threat from Apple isn’t the games but in the media. Can Microsoft really compete against Apple in terms of movie, music, and all that? Of course not. Xbox One smells like PSP redux. Microsoft has been unsuccessful in all their media products everywhere else so why would they suddenly be successful with Xbox One?
