Email: Sakurai hates Youtube

Boy, this one is really strange.  I’m not a huge Smash Bros. fan (I play it occasionally with friends), but I caught this quote and scratched my head:

“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet.. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”

The next Smash Bros. won’t have a story mode because of Youtube. …  Huh?

I mean, I’m not arguing with no story mode (for all I know people might like that decision), but what a weird reason for not including cutscenes.  Because of Youtube?  Why the hell is Nintendo trying to force people to play a game a certain way?  Oh, right.  Game gods.  You are not allowed to skip playing the game and watch the cutscenes on Youtube.  The chef doesn’t want you skipping the main course and going straight to dessert.

Wait a second… can we get that idiot Aonuma to follow this line of reasoning too?  At least we’d have a way get rid of those horrendous Zelda cutscenes.

You sum it up best by saying ‘Why the hell is Nintendo trying to force people to play a game a certain way?’ So what if someone chooses to view the cutscenes over the Internet. Does that make them not wish to buy the game? Smash doesn’t revolve around cutscenes anyway.

What is the relationship of the gamer to the Nintendo developer? Apparently, it is the relationship of potter to the clay. The Nintendo developer is to ‘shape’ your feelings. Your feelings aren’t allowed to shape how you play the game.
