“Such nonsense. Mario is about beating up goombas and turtles. Zelda is about Link stabbing and chopping monsters. Metroid is about Samus shooting everything. Nintendo games are founded on violence.”

While Nintendo was thinking they made rainbows and sunshine,  meanwhile in the west…

(actually unedited scene from Boys in the Hood, which would be used as a template for GTA San Andres)
Most people forget how true this statement back in era of the NES it was HARD convincing your parent to get you the system and games because of frankly how violent those games were or what they were associated with.  Lets look at some of the most popular games on the system.

Double Dragon- The very start of the game a women is knocked unconscious and carried away by a street gang where billy and jimmy proceed to punch and kick MORE women and other gang members.

Battletoads- Where you use enough force to drive your ratty enemies into the ground then soccer kick them in the face!

Contra- Its bad enough it was name alone was associated with the Nicaraguan Contras, how many soldiers die in this game?

Punchout-  Its boxing.  With stereotypes and a convicted rapist in it!  Oh my!

Castlevania-  Simon belfort decides to rid the land of monsters, by throwing knives into there faces and breaking them apart with a whip!
Ninja Gaiden-  The game that was even promoted in the kids movie The Wizard!  Starts off with a battle to the death with Ninjas, a hot chick shooting a gun and demonic themes!

Batman- The satisfying ending of batman throwing the joker off a building and seeing his pix elated death face as he hits the pavement!

Bionic Commando-  Hitlers exploding face!

The funny thing about all these games I mentioned are considered Classics and must buys for any NES library!

Its like Nintendo likes to re imagine its history as some innocent school girl but we all remember the bad ass fiery red head who skipped class to smoke cigarettes out back.
Mario Kart and Smash Brothers are very violent too. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were all about violence. One of the great appeals to Tetris was that there was no violence. The game was unique.

Donkey Kong was pretty violent! You make the big monkey fall to his death!
