There are some funny stories. During the tutorial, when I encountered the big boss creature, I actually nearly killed him with the blunted blade. I figured I was supposed to kill the boss. I kept wondering, “Gee, how much life does this guy have? LOL.” As I got near to killing him, I began to realize that I shouldn’t be doing that. No WAY would a designer make this first boss take that long to kill! hahahaha.
Much of Dark Souls is navigating the 3d architecture. That is boring to me. You guys know my thoughts on the more 3d intensive games.
Dark Souls is difficult to comment on because marketing or popular opinion has made a nice and tidy deal with the game. If you love Dark Souls, you are praised for being ‘skiilled’/’hardcore’/’sophisticated’/’you get the picture’. If you criticize Dark Souls, you are condemned for being ‘wussy’/’not a real gamer’/etc. With this type of arrangement going on, you’re going to find critics de-balled and people wanting to praise even if they aren’t thrilled with the game. In the land of Game Message Forum,m everyone wants to be ‘teh uber’.
My problem isn’t with the difficulty. I just don’t find the gameplay compelling. This isn’t so much as a Dark Souls issue as a modern game issue for me. I don’t find the gameplay compelling in most modern games. Especially the modern console games.
How do we arrive at anything objective especially concerning a game like Dark Souls? One thing that sticks in my mind is how much it costs. It is $30 for PC (I got it for $10). It is LESS THAN $20 on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. For the amount of prestige and fame this game has been given, it is odd that the price points are so low. It makes me wonder what the true value of this game is. I bet that most people buying it now are people like me who buy it because ‘everyone is talking about it OMG’, but they don’t get really into it.
Again, let me state that I don’t find the game frustrating, I find it boring. Does this mean the game is bad. No. It just means it isn’t the right game for me. Besides, I can’t think of any 3d orientated combat games I’ve liked.
Many people making the comparisons of ‘Dark Souls is like the Old School games’. This isn’t true. Old School games were cheerful. Even the PC ones. The entire world of Dark Souls comes across to me as very bland.
