Blizzard’s upcoming new game

From Kotaku:

On their resume, a Blizzard staffer states that they “are working a top-secret project to be unveiled sometime in 2014.”

What could it be? There is a hint:

With Hearthstone, Blizzard has revived its tradition of creating small and nimble game teams and [the unannounced project team is] following in those footsteps.” A level designer opening on the team talks up “competitive multi-player games” and “game maps,” suggesting a game at least more like Heroes of the Storm than Hearthstone. Although Blizzard’s existing AAA brands are not going away anytime soon, there seems to be a trend at Blizzard toward less costly, smaller future projects, and my suspicion is that Titan, assuming it is still in development in some form, might have transformed to a title on the scale of Hearthstone or Heroes of the Storm.

Oh Kotaku. Unless they have inside information or heard rumors we haven’t, I don’t think that is the case at all. I don’t think the new top secret project is the collapsed remains (of the bread that didn’t rise) of Titan.

I really, really, really like Blizzard’s move to making SMALLER games. Ironically, these ‘smaller games’ are what we used to call ‘normal games’ back in the 1990s such as Rock and Roll Racing or Warcraft 1 and 2. I believe game development has OVERSHOT most gamers’ needs. Look at Minecraft and the success that game had. Hearthstone appears to be successful. It’s too early to tell about Heroes of the Storm, but I think everyone agrees that game will produce profit. This ‘back to basics’ approach is something I really wish Nintendo would do (which they did with the Wii and DS. They completely abandoned that model to make super expensive 3DS games and even more super expensive games with Wii U. 3d handheld and HD are very expensive.)

What I REALLY, REALLY WANT Blizzard to make is a TURN BASED STRATEGY game such as Master of Orion or Master of Magic. They could use the Starcraft or Warcraft universes for it. These games would also work great on a tablet.

What is the MOST PROBABLE answer for Blizzard’s super secret project is likely a Warcraft Remake of Warcraft 1. I have heard there is great interest inside the company for doing this as Warcraft 1 is largely unplayable today. It would not be that expensive to make a more up-to-date Warcraft 1 plus its simplicity would hit a different market than Starcraft 2’s. It would also give those waiting for Warcraft IV something to play. Best of all, they could sell a Warcraft 1 Remake to the WoW players who are currently playing an expansion that goes into Warcraft’s history.
