Email: Video on recent events and the understanding of what is a video game

Master Malstrom:

I believe you should see this video. It’s about the recent stuff with the “game” Gone Home, game reviewer sites, and the changing trend of video gamers and the word gamer.

.
Gamer means you play a game. Hardcore gamer means the game plays you. The Game Industry, including the gaming press, tries to push certain games and praise at certain games. The gamers, themselves, are not to decide these things. If they did, we’d have more games like Wii Sports or 2d Mario. But those in the Game Industry don’t like those type of games because they can’t demonstrate their brilliant creativity (which they feel is the reason why they were born). The most common video games used to be sports games such as tennis or football. PONG was a sports game and sold exclusively from Sear’s Sporting Good Store. Other games were computerized versions of board games, pen and paper games, and the ‘fictional universe games’ were nerdy game developers making a ‘space ship game’ based from their favorite TV show of Star Trek or Star Wars. There was emphasis on GAMES then. There was no emphasis on ‘I’m a Unique Flower, and it is time for you to bask in my Creativity.”
.
Gaming used to be more like the indie game scene today. Some indie games are good or bad. Some people like some way more than others. Reviews are written in some professional areas but there are many gamers making their own reviews. Those who make indie games are chill. They’re just happy to be making games for a living instead of having a ‘real job’.
.
Game development used to be design based. However, this has all been tipped over to games being production based. (I believe the original Wing Commander started it all.) There is so much money shoved into these games to generate these ‘production values’ that it has made games so very expensive to make. These big businesses try to reduce the risk by marketing hype and getting the media to act like dogs for them. The ‘not games’ the video is referring to is the idea of making games with no game and only ‘production values’. But gamers aren’t going to be putting up with that.
.
His commentary on game media is interesting. We know they all get together and talk about things (which is how they become of like mind). It is a similar phenomenon that occurs with general news. The journalists all share the same forum and they ‘agree’ to all go a certain way. You can go to any game journalist site and read the same exact thing from one to the other.
.
In the 90s when game media was governed by fan sites, you had differing opinions and point of views. It was refreshing to see different ideas. Today, the gaming media says the same thing. Worse, gaming message forums push everyone to become similar in their viewpoints too. “This game is great because the gaming message forum agreed it was!” But if numbers is what they wanted, why do they ignore the sales? “Sales doesn’t mean quality! But message forum posts are what determines quality! And gaming media reviews! Oh yeah!”
.
Looking up ‘Gone Home’ more, I can see what is going on here. The video author is skipping around the bush by saying it is fine people don’t like Gone Home because it is not a video game. No, people don’t like Gone Home because it is homosexual propaganda. People do not play video games to find out about the ‘wonder’ of gay relationships. The fact that there isn’t a ‘game’ really hints that Gone Home is trying to deliver its narrative by a two-by-four swing to the head.
.
The video does make a point of mentioning game developer females who do not get mentioned because they don’t write narratives or advertise their gender. I’ve made a similar point long, long ago when 1up was giving awards to ‘women in game industry’ and kept focusing on mediocrities. I suggested they should instead look to people like the early female programmers (Archon [1983] was programmed by a woman) and King’s Quest series and Gabriel Knight series was done by women. Hell, the creator of M.UL.E. became a woman!  For daring to suggest this, feminists decided to bombard my comment section with their typical accusations. It’s why I closed off comments.
.
The video dude is correct that they will assault your name over the Internet. But it won’t stop there. They will target your family. They are, to use Shakespeare’s term for Iago, demi-devils.
