I’m currently playing Mortal Kombat 9. The game is good and very true to what anyone would expect from Mortal Kombat. Instead of doing weird 3d stuff, Mortal Kombat got back to what the gameplay was about. It went into a modern arcade style which fit perfectly. I also really like how the ‘story’ starts from Mortal Kombat 1. Mortal Kombat always got media coverage because of its gore and fatalities, but it is the lore that I find the game so compelling (even though I am terrible at these fighting games). The success of the movie and how some people even view it as a classic (!) testifies to how people enjoy the game’s universe. Mortal Kombat 9 was a big sales success especially when people said 2d fighting games had no demand. (Street Fight IV and Injustice also showed the demand was there.)
I still think universe and lore are the primary reasons why people tune in to Mortal Kombat. I’m worried that Mortal Kombat X will be Ed Boon deciding to go ‘creative’ (oh, that word!) and make alternate universe depictions of the characters. Instead of adding on to the universe, he will do a parallel universe type weird thing.
I think game makers underestimate how much demand there is a for a consistent cohesive gaming universe. It’d be a shame to screw it all up.
And what is Boon’s bias toward Scorpion? Do we need that many Scorpions in a MK game?
