In our alternate universe, only Nintendo publishes games exist on the SNES. What would the SNES look like?
Is this console worth buying? Would the SNES be as popular WITHOUT these games?
There are some strong titles in this library. You have Super Mario Kart, Super Metroid, and the Donkey Kong Country games. What is really interesting is how it compares to the NES list. It is nearly a direct copy for the most point. Nintendo ported over the Mario games, Wario’s Woods, Tetris 2, Tetris, and Dr. Mario. However, those weren’t NEW games so should we really consider them? At least with the arcade ports on the NES, that was the first time to get really good arcade ports for most of those games except Donkey Kong and maybe Mario Brothers. In a way, Nintendo was really safe with their SNES line-up and made mostly the same games they made for the NES! The Quintlet RPGs that Nintendo published are truly interesting. Earthbound is the most overrated game ever. There is a reason why it bombed in the market, and it wasn’t due to the marketing. I don’t remember the SNES sports games Nintendo published to be remarkable.
This library has more of an ‘echo’ feel to it with much less originality. I tuned out in the middle of the 16-bit generation. There aren’t many new Nintendo IPs. Aside from Donkey Kong country which Rare made, there are no new IPs at all!
So I’d have to say NO, the SNES is not worth getting if it only had Nintendo published games.
