Master MaelstromAre you in a mood to discuss something other than Nintendo or Election? One interesting thing I observed over the years is the difference between free and paid contents. I think it was the internet that really put a lot of free content on the table in quantity that old media could not. Paid and not paid had entirely opposite implication in just about anything. For example, a typical popular video on youtube would have many million views and overwhelming positive rating, but no one in the world would pay a dime in order to watch, it seems that people love the Nayan cat or the homestuck, the reality is they don;t care. The love for Darth Vader on the other hand is real sense it came from their wallet. People cares about Darth Vader. They may even pay much less for a Darth Vader knock off, but they absolutely will not pay anything for Nayan cat. Now imagine a boring lecture on embedded system, it has no appeal for the mass, it has no attractive humor, and it would never get past 100 views, but it can be the most expansive video for many of us, and people are willing to pay for it. Again people cares. How many CMDA take down had the scale of popularity above Nayan cat or some random shit talking video game? We don’t give off value for free. Popularity isn’t the measure of the worth, value is. The same goes for gaming, free games are usually not worth bothering for a real gamer or anyone who value their time. Cheap games no matter how cheap are on entirely a different level. To produce anything of value is not an easy task, it involve a consistent practice on mastery of an art from, be it entertainment or other profession. It is not something can be cooked up in a few hour with a webcam and video editor. Recently I came to an revelation that I should not bother with free content anymore, if I don;t treat myself as worthless people, I don;t consume worthless content. Playing free indie game or watch youtube prank really don;t gain me anything, in fact I only have things to lose, as I wast my time on things that makes me stupid. Those produce worthless content yet ask people to make donation are just beggars, on the RL raod or on the E road, makes no difference.
Nintendo or Election? I’ve been trying to talk about the PC-Engine/Turbograpfx 16. There are huge NES/SNES and Sega fans. But the Turbografx 16 is like another species of video games as distinct of personality as a SNES or Genesis. Heavy on the Japanese side, heavy on the arcade side. Unfortunately, the American version of the console has too many cut corners such as the AV connections and lack of battery save.
Above: Such a great game system! But this video is half a decade old. It is MUCH tougher to get one now.
Anyway, you make a good point about differentiating between paid and free content. There is a great form of advice that is ‘the worst advice is free’. Yet, everyone keeps taking free advice. The two major things that can influence your life is FINANCE and LOVE. Yet, both of these are filled with ‘free advice’. It is also the ‘worst advice’.
PAID gaming is SO MUCH CHEAPER than FREE gaming. FREE gaming relies on hamster wheels, microtransactions, and tons of time wasted.
Time > Money. You can always get more money, but you can never get more time.
