Meaning

Who gets to define the meaning of the entertainment? The Sisko answers:

Above: Go to 36:30 for the answer. I set it up to start there, but either Youtube or WordPress isn’t cooperating.

And of course, Shatner advertises another new show he’s making. But even Shatner recognizes where the meaning comes from.

Who gets to define the meaning of Super Mario Brothers and Zelda? You’re wasting your time asking Miyamoto or Aonuma. They don’t get to define the meaning of it. The audience gets to define the meaning of it. Without the audience, there is no entertainment.

Who gets to define the meaning of a food dish? It isn’t the cook no matter what ‘creativity’ child-dreams he has. the meaning is defined by the diner. The dish does not exist in a vacuum by itself. Its meaning and existence depends entirely on the diner, not the cook.

What is the meaning of Super Mario Brothers? Unlike other games, this particular game was taken to the heart of children. It is not a part of their childhood, it is their childhood. This is a highly privileged spot which few entertainment can enter. I fear that inside Nintendo there is no respect for this ‘meaning’, only a quiet despising that people still like Mario as a grand 2d adventure, and Nintendo is going to ruin something very wonderful, something special enough that I’m seeing children who grew up with Mario want their children to have the same magic in their childhood. But Nintendo developers seem to be so ego mad that they think they get to define the meaning of entertainment with their constant ‘creativity quests’. When I watch kids play, you can see the magic of gaming being reflected in a child’s eyes. The gamers are the source of the magic. The gamers are the source of the meaning.
